What It's All About

Calling all sock knitters! Whether you’ve knit only a couple of socks or (what seems like) a hundred, you’ll want to take this full day workshop (6 hours) with sock superstar, Lucy Neatby. This is an advanced sock workshop for happy sock knitters who wish to refine or spice up their socks. Lucy will start with casting on and the essential properties of sock tops, including variations of Long Tail and Channel Island cast-on (a beautiful edge for a 1 x 1 rib). Then she’ll move on with you to heels to show you some alternatives such as the Garter Stitch Short Row and the Turkish heel. You’ll find out how to determine their placement and adjust them for better fit. At the toe, Lucy will demonstrate her revolutionary Toe Chimney for easy grafting with no anxiety or loose stitches! And along the way, Lucy will share her tips for keeping count, adjusting for different feet shapes and sizes and will show you how to make a Provisional Crochet Cast-On (the easy way) so that you can knit upwards for long-leg socks or use up the remains of your sock yarn. She’ll also show you three methods to avoid tight bound-off edges for toe-up socks.

This workshop will take place at the Hilton Doubletree Silverbirch Conference Centre. You will be treated to a hot continental breakfast, buffet lunch and non-stop beverages and snacks all day long (included in your registration fee). You’ll enjoy the retreat atmosphere that the hotel provides while learning new skills.

Skill Level

Intermediate sock knitters upwards - must have knit at least one sock!

Please bring:

  • 20g each of smooth wool-blend yarns (these need not be ‘sock’ yarns) in Worsted or DK/Sport (5 sts per inch or fewer) in 2 or more plain, light colours. Note: we will be working samples not a sock. Fine sock yarns and needles may be used, but is far easier to see the details of your stitches and techniques in larger yarns and solid, light colours.

  • 3 sets of double pointed needles (DPNs); two sets in sizes appropriate to your yarn (they need not be the same size) and a significantly finer set. If you prefer working on circular needles (one or two) bring a suitable selection.

  • Scissors

  • Crochet hook (same size or smaller as the needle size you bring to class)

  • Blunt darning needle

  • Usual knitting paraphernalia (tape measure, stitch markers, etc.)
