What It's All About

In this introductory four-hour workshop, you will learn how to create a firm and dense crochet fabric to form the body of your octopus, how to form the shape of your octopus with increases and decreases, how to crochet and attach safe-for-baby eyes made out of yarn, and a simple and easy way to make curly tentacles. If you want to add a contrasting edging to your tentacles, you can use your second colour to do that and we’ll show you how. And, you’ll have enough yarn leftover to make a second octopus in opposite colours. We think you’ll have so much fun, you may want to keep going and create a whole colony of colourful octopi!

We chose this pattern because it is simple enough for amigurumi newbies, has clear instructions, and uses a clever construction that eliminates any need for sewing pieces together. The entire head and all eight tentacles are crocheted with one continuous piece of yarn! It makes a great toy to give to a new baby - even preemies are soothed by grasping onto the tentacles and older children are enchanted by it too. Or keep it for yourself - this cute creature will brighten anyone’s day!

We provide two balls of stunning Rowan cotton yarn in the colours of your choosing, and explain why cotton is the yarn of choice for amigurumi . We also provide stuffing for the head, and an electronic version of the pattern by Cheryl of Crochet 365 Knit Too. All you need to bring is a 2.75 mm hook, a stitch marker and a tapestry needle. We’ll call you to confirm your colour choice combination (choose from the combinations displayed in the class photos) or you can email cynthia@rivercityyarns.com with your first and second preference. *Note: depending on registrations, we may not be able to fulfill your first colour choice. We’ll do our best, but be prepared with a second option!
