What It's All About

Join us for a short introduction to dyeing yarn at home. We’ll show you how to use food safe dyes and equipment from your kitchen to create your own custom colourways. You’ll learn how to prepare yarn for dyeing and and how to apply dye to get different effects such as gradients, variegation and semi-solids. You’ll dye 200g of yarn in class and receive a dye kit that you can take home (and “dye” another day!) We’ll show you how dyes react differently on different types of yarn including superwash, blends and darker bases and we’ll demonstrate how to “overdye” if you want to change the colour of your stash! We’ll also talk to you about how to keep your hand dyed yarns looking their best and brightest.

We'll provide a dye kit for you to use in class (and take home with you), including: 200g of yarn, a special glass jar for your dye experiments and food safe dyes. We'll also provide the "kitchen" implements and ingredients required for creating the dye bath and for setting your colour. You'll want to immediately go home and start dyeing your way through your stash!

Please bring:

  • A hand towel (may get stained with dye)

  • A pair of rubber gloves
