New! Felted Tote Sampler Class
New! Felted Tote Sampler Class
Learn how to create your own custom felted bag using the awesome Kauni Effektgarn. You’ll master stranded colourwork and “shrinking on purpose”. How cool is that?
What It's All About
Learn how to knit stranded colourwork and how to felt knitted fabric. In this two part workshop, we will guide you through the technical parts to make a sampler (mini) colourwork tote bag and felt it, taking before and after measurements to design a full size tote.
In the first session, the focus will be on working with two different coloured yarns, one in each hand. You’ll learn about fixing mistakes with duplicate stitch and off to a promising start, take your sample tote home to finish. In the second session, you’ll take your sample tote through the entire felting process. Our instructor will help you prepare your sample for felting and assist you in taking measurements and making notes on any changes (individual design elements) you made. Each sample will then go into our portable washing machine! The final piece to this session will be seeing how individual and unique the felting process is. You will take “after” measurements and note the amount (percentage) of shrinkage. Pattern modification options will be discussed based on your felted sample, to create your customized full sized tote. A demonstration of embellishment and finishing techniques for the full sized totes will be covered as well.
This project is (mainly) knit in the round using a circular needle. You should be comfortable casting on, knitting, purling and binding off. You don’t need to be a very experienced knitter but if stranded colourwork is a new technique for you, we recommend that you build time into your personal schedule to practice a little, every day and to stay on top of your homework.
Using Kauni 8/2 100% wool yarn in one of your colours (see materials list below), cast on 20 stitches, double-stranded and work 20 rows in garter stitch (10 garter ridges), using your 5.0mm knitting needles. Leave your stitches on your needle and bring with you to the first class.
2 balls of Kauni 8/2 100% wool yarn in two contrasting colours (we have combo kits here in the shop that range from $44 - $64 in price). This will be enough yarn to make a sampler and a full tote bag and is a yarn that felts reliably.
5 mm circular needles in 40 cm and 60 cm lengths;
6 stitch markers;
notebook and pen/cil
your knitter’s toolkit, including a tape measure, scissors, tapestry needle.
