Our annual Wool, Wine and Wheels trip from Edmonton to Jasper, Alberta via VIA was a great success.
This year, we took Lucy Neatby with us and hosted the event at the Milligan Cabin of the Jasper Park Lodge. Surrounded by mountains and herds of elk and covered with a fine sprinkling of snow we industriously worked our way through Lucy’s lessons on double knitting, lace and short rows, taking breaks (of course!) to eat, drink and be merry.
John and Margaret of John Steel Rail Tours organized the trip for us and accompanied our group, taking care of all the travel and accommodation details. Having two very capable and seasoned travelers along ensured that all the travel details from luggage tags to meals on the train and check in/out were easy, relaxing and… well, completely taken care of!
Lucy worked with us on the train, helping knitters out with their “train projects” and getting to know each of the participants. At the Lodge, Lucy entertained all with a slide show featuring her home-office-studio and stories of her life as a merchant mariner, mother and knit wear designer. Lucy is a very engaging, warm and thoughtful instructor who uses technology to it’s fullest advantage for teaching. Using a projector and laptop computer, Lucy was able to demonstrate all of her knitting techniques on a screen so that we all could literally “look over her shoulder” to see her hands in action. It became the goal of the group to come out with “contented stitches” - one of Lucy’s teaching mottos.
Jasper National Park is one of the world’s best locations for a knitting getaway… in addition to the breathtaking scenery, we also enjoyed seeing elk, white tailed deer and mountain sheep.
