GUEST INSTRUCTOR: SARAH HATTON

About Sarah

We're very excited to be hosting British knitwear designer, Sarah Hatton. Sarah will be teaching three workshops at River City Yarns on March 5 and 6. Don't miss this fantastic opportunity to learn new skills and design secrets!

We've been fans of Sarah for quite a while... check out her designs by opening just about any Rowan publication in the last 10 years! Sarah also has two brand new publications that are getting lots of attention: Knitted Scarves and Shrugs and Vintage Inspired Projects.

Sarah Hatton learned to knit at the age of five and has always had a love of textiles. Her first job, after gaining her degree in fashion was as a designer with a hand knit company. It was here she got to develop her skills in knitting, pattern writing and design. Sarah prides herself on the fact that since graduating she has always worked in the hand knitting industry. She has designed for well known brands including Rowan, Patons, Sirdar and Sublime. Sarah produces amazing wearable garments that explore and push the boundaries of shape and texture.

"I love the hands on approach to fashion that hand knit offers; it's also wonderful to be able to make gifts for loved ones as well as stylish garments for yourself."
- Sarah Hatton

Workshops with Sarah

Understanding Lace and Designing Your Own Lace Charts
Tuesday, March 5 from 1:00pm to 4:00pm at River City Yarns West

Intermediate: A little prior chart-reading and lace experience required.
This workshop aims to give you a deeper understanding of how lace is formed. Sarah will talk about the different stitches used to make lace, how to track lace patterns in chart form, and then help you design your own simple lace chart. Your in-depth examination of lace structure will also help you understand how to correct errors in lace patterns, which in turn will help you be more relaxed with your lace knitting! Maximum: 15 students. Registration fee: $60 (three hour workshop). Participants will need to bring a basic knitting kit, waste yarn and a pencil.

Understanding Texture: Infinite Possibilities in Two Stitches
Tuesday, March 5 from 5:30pm to 8:30pm at River City Yarns West

Beginner to intermediate: No prior chart-reading experience necessary.
Many non-knitters don't know that all knitted fabric is a combination of just two stitches: knit and purl! The vast complexity that is possible just by combining these two stitches reveals how deeply creative our craft can be. If you're a newer knitter intimidated by charts, or just tentative about breaking away from garter and stockinette, come sit with Sarah and open yourself up to texture. You'll come away with a solid foundation in chart reading, as well as how different texture stitches behave as knitted fabric. Maximum: 15 students. Registration fee: $60 (three hour workshop)

Amending a Pattern and Pattern Writing Basics
Wednesday, March 6 from 1:00pm to 7:00pm at River City Yarns West

Intermediate: you've worked from a pattern to knit a sweater and you understand gauge. Ever looked at a knitting pattern and thought about making a few changes? Haven't we all? If you've ever thought about changing the length of a sweater, wished for different type of neckline, wanted something more fitted or with more ease - then this is the workshop for you! Bring along your favourite Rowan pattern that you'd like to amend or a garment that you like to wear and Sarah will explain basic pattern writing and help you understand how and where to make alterations, for example, turning pullovers into cardigans, adjusting the neck shaping or sleeve length. You may even be inspired to start to write your own pattern! By the end of this workshop, you'll have an understanding of how a basic pattern is written, have the confidence to amend an existing pattern and be on the way to writing a pattern to accommodate your size, shape and design desires. Maximum: 15 students. Registration fee: $96 (this is a five hour workshop with time built in for food, refreshment and shopping breaks!) Participants will need to bring a basic knitting kit, calculator and a pencil. If you have yarn in mind for a project please bring a ball along as well.

Early Bird Registration: register early to avoid disappointment and we'll give you up to $20 in RCY gift coupons. Here's how it works: register on or before February 14th and you'll receive a $5 gift coupon for registering in 1 workshop; a $10 gift coupon for registering in 2 workshops or a $20 gift coupon for registering in all three workshops. Your RCY gift coupon can be redeemed at face value on purchases you make on the day of the workshops. Some conditions apply: your gift coupon cannot be used to purchase gift certificates or toward other workshop registrations; it has no cash value and can only be used once per transaction/customer. This gift coupon may only be redeemed on a purchase made between March 4 - 6, 2013.
