What It's All About

This beautiful stranded colourwork hat has been very popular since it was first published for Shetland Wool Week 2015. A paid (for purchase) pattern, available through Ravelry: “It is a quick knit and it makes an ideal introduction to Fair Isle / colour work knitting.”

We thought so too! And decided it would be a great beginner workshop for those who want to try stranded colourwork. You will learn how: to use both hands (left and right) to knit in two colours across each row, to catch up floats on the inside and to avoid “puckering” in the patterning. You’ll also gain experience working from charts and learn how gauge, blocking and colour choices affect your stranded colourwork projects. A copy of the pattern will be purchased and given to you in class as well as an electronic download option.

Pre-work Required

With 4.0mm needles and shade A, cast on 96 stitches. Join to work in the round (make sure your stitches are not twisted.) Work 4 inches of K2, P2 ribbing for bottom of hat.

Please bring:

  • your pre-work,
  • two sizes of knitting needles for knitting in the round (dpns, short (16”) circular or long circular for magic loop – your choice) in 4.0mm and 4.5mm.
