River City Yarns Gallery
Pictured below are a number of projects completed by "friends and family" of River City Yarns. We'd love to post your pictures, too. Send a photo (or 2) plus some details to rivercityyarns@shaw.ca. Some of the photos below will change if you "mouseover" them.

Barb taught an Egyptian Beaded Bracelet class in Gibson's Landing on August 19, 2010. She did a great job! And so did all the clever and willing students. Here are the pictures of the finished cuffs - done in a day!
Robbi's Golf Sweater

Our friend Robbi has been hard at work finishing projects. If, like most of us, you have five or six projects on the go, you may find that you have a week (or two) when you just keep finishing things. It feels very gratifying.

The “Golf Sweater” (top-left) is a 15 year work in progress that Robbi has decided to gift to her mom (a golf aficionado). Robbi said, “ I really did start it 15 years ago and I had done the back, both sleeves and one front. But got stuck and put it away... Then I decided it could be done and got the help of several people at River City Yarns.” We’re proud of you, Robbi—it’s a beautiful sweater.

The cashmere neckwrap (middle-left) is a gift for one of Robbi’s friends who likes to wear scarves and who was amazed at the amount of yarn in Robbi’s house. Can you relate?

And then, Robbi took the Knitting with Beads workshop at RCY with Barb and used a beautiful handpainted angora (Peter Rabbit by Handmaiden). As Robbi knit, the angora fluffed… and in the end, she decided that it wasn’t a good yarn for a bracelet. So, she continued on and turned them into cuffs for a pair of fingerless mittens. Clever! These are the most luxurious and wonderful cuffs (bottom-left).

Sue's Norwegian Bag
Sue T. made this gorgeous Norwegian knapsack (mouseover the image for a closeup). You can too! The pattern for this beautiful bag is in the book, Norwegian Handknits: Heirloom Designs from Vesterheim Museum. We have this book in stock.
Barb E. wrote in with a note about thrummed mittens (pictures below): "I saw a booth with thrummed mittens at the Calgary market and got inspired to try them myself. However, I've never knit on 4 double pointed needles, never knit a mitten nor a thumb. So I took Cynthia's thrummed mittens class in February and made the multicolored pair attached. It was really fun. Then, in order to improve my first effort, I knit another pair (wine color) for my daughter to match a scarf I had knit her for Christmas. She was delighted with them."

From Barb E.: "Two years ago, my daughter went to Vienna for a study term exchange, and I went to visit her. While there, she took me to the Hundertwasser Museum to see the unique colors and paintings and building designs of this remarkable artist. I purchased a print as a souvenir and in the gift shop they had three large balls of yarn painted with colors from one of his paintings. I brought one home and wondered what to do with it. It started as a scarf in a triangle pattern that I had picked up in your store a few years ago. After a couple of feet, I felt that something more special needed to be made from it. It sat for a year and I picked it up this past winter and knit more triangle lengths, then sewed them together to cover cushions (used a solid color on the back). There was enough to make 2 cushions to decorate my daughter's condo as a special reminder of her term in Vienna."

Hi ladies! My husband came into the store and made up a Fiesta Mitt kit for me at Christmas in (gulp) 2008 and I finally got around to knitting them up. They turned out so beautifully, I had to show them to you!
He chose Lucy's pattern, one ball of Phildar Preface in an olive green colour (which turned out to be just the right amount even though I made the mitts much longer than the pattern stated) and one skein of Misti Alpaca Hand Paint Sock Yarn in the Miriam colourway. I only used about 20 grams of the Misti, which means I have loads left over for a small scarf now too! The halo on the Misti alpaca totally softens the stitch pattern and makes the mitts look perfectly luxurious. I loved every minute of knitting them - thanks for helping him pick everything out for me!

Hello River City Yarns,
Just thought I would send you a picture of the 2 wool jackets that resulted from a purchase of Bulky Lopi wool from your north side store. I asked my mom, Bonnie, to knit them as gifts for Christmas for my wife and me. The jackets were inspired from an old White Buffalo pattern my mom had around for some time. My brown jacket (right) was actually knit in 2 and a half days to be on time for Christmas. Thankfully my mom is a fast (and good!) knitter. I might be biased but I think they are gorgeous. Jim W.

Dear River City Yarn friends,
I would like to wish you a happy and successful new year. I have appreciated coming into your store to get yarn and receive help. I have not knitted for about 25 years and have just started again for my grandson. ... I have included some pictures of fun things that I have made for my grandson who was born in March 2009.

The bear hat and mitts were made from Snowflake chunky yarn (light brown) and wool/bamboo (dark brown). The hat pattern was adapted from Sirdar Early Arrivals 3. The mitt pattern came from Zoe Mellor Adorable Knits for Tots with paw prints added to the palms.

The cotton suit was made from Butterfly cotton. The pattern was from Zoe Mellor. The hat was added.

The penguin toy was done with Cascade yarns, black, white and California poppy. The basic pattern was from Zoe Mellor. The black wool was double stranded with Multifizz black to give the fuzzy body. The bag was added and filled with tubby toys.

The Wool sweater was done using Regina wool. The pattern was from Zoe Mellor Nursery Knits. The sweater had a little lion on the front with a mouse on the back from Aesop's fable about "The lion and the mouse".

I have enjoyed making each of these items and have always looked forward to getting help from your staff. You are so knowledgeable about your stock and have made my shopping at your store enjoyable and rewarding. Thanks for your help.

Ruth E.

(Mouseover Trish's photos for a closer view of her nuno felting).

Karen's Afghan Karen N. sent us this message and several photos... "Hello, 2-3 years ago I ordered several balls of grey Pegase by Phildar so that I could finish an afghan. I had taken a sampler course and made about 8 squares. I then decided that I would need to make several more squares to complete an afghan. I knit the joining frames and the outer frame and then stitched the whole thing together." Well done, Karen!
