2 Hour Project Tutorials
You’ve been inspired to pick up one of the projects on display in the store and you’d like a little on-going assistance to complete it. We have a new, 5-visit drop in punch card that you can purchase and scheduled drop-in times so you can get the help and support you need. Each visit entitles you to a 2 hour group tutorial session with one of our knitting instructors. Just call ahead to book your spot in one of our drop-in sessions. You can also exchange one punch for a ½ hour one-on-one lesson.
$75 for a 5 visit punch card pass.
Specified drop in times listed on workshop calendar.

Drop-In Knitting Circle
Come by the store and work on your knitting (or other handcraft) projects. This is a good opportunity to socialize with other "fiber artists" and to support each others' work.
Free. First Thursday of each month from 7-9 PM at River City Yarns

  Baby Sock Boot Camp
Join Cynthia for an intensive afternoon of flexing your needles and mastering socks. We'll whip up a small size sock using all the construction techniques of an adult sock - in much less time! Baby socks are great gifts and you can make several pairs from one single ball of sock yarn or make a matching pair of adult socks. You'll learn to cast on and knit in the round using your choice of double pointed needles (dpns) or two circulars; you'll "turn a heel" and pick up stitches, decrease for the gusset and learn how to close the toe. Socks require no seaming! Materials: 1 ball of fingering weight (sock) yarn, one pair of 2.5 - 3.0mm double pointed needles or two 60cm circular needles. Pattern included in registration fee.
$45 (plus materials) for one, 4-hour workshop
Friday, June 6 from 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM

fair isle

Fair Isle Knitting
Join Cynthia for a half day workshop to explore the traditional form of "stranded colour work" often referred to as the Fair Isle style of knitting. Participants will learn to knit and purl with two colours of yarn carried in either hand; how to catch or strand the colour not in use; read charts for colour work and experiment with creating individual designs. This type of two-colour knitting will be used on both "flat" pieces (worked on straight needles) and "in the round" (on double pointed or circular needles). During this session, we will create sample pieces and work on charted designs. Participants are also welcome to bring a pattern of their own choosing to class to work out the charts, pattern concerns and to ask questions about the method of knitting. Materials: 3-5 small balls of worsted weight yarn (preferably all the same brand and in contrasting colours), one pair of 4.0 - 5.0mm knitting needles and a set of 4.0 - 5.0mm double pointed needles (or a short 60cm or smaller) circular needle.
$45 (plus materials) for two, 2-hour workshop sessions
Thursday, June 12 and June 19 from 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Sampler Series
Join us for this five-session, bi-weekly series and learn how to knit entrelac, cables, lace, mitered squares and do shadow knitting. In each class you will create a square using one of these diverse techniques; between classes you can try other forms. Bring your “homework” back to class to see how different yarns and gauges will affect the look of practice pieces. Your sampler squares can be made into potholders, a pillow or an afghan. In addition to learning several knitting techniques and styles, this workshop will also improve your ability to read patterns and understand written directions. Materials required: worsted/aran weight yarn in solid and/or variegated colours (colour coordination is a good idea for pillows or afghans); knitting needles suitable for yarn size; cable needle and wool needle; crochet hook in size similar to knitting needles is optional). Yarn kits will be available to registered students at a reduced rate. Prerequisite: learners should know how to cast on, knit and purl and cast off.
$85 (plus materials) for all five, 2-hour sessions
$25 (plus materials) for one, 2-hour session

Entrelac Knitting Session: learn about this fascinating knitting technique wihich is used to create a textured diamond pattern. While the end result resembles basket-woven strips of knitted fabric, the actual material comprises interconnected squares on two different orientations.

Cables: A knitted cable is accomplished by knitting the stitches out of order. You can make a simple cable with four stitches by knitting the second two stitches firs then the first two stitiches second, for example. Once you learn the basic method of creating a cable - getting those stitches "out of order" - no cable will be too complicated for you!

lucy neatby

I Love Lucy! Knit-A-Long Kickoff (Show and Tell)
Are you a Lucy Neatby fan? Did you attend one of her workshops this past winter? Do you want to learn some cool techniques (for which Lucy is noted)? If you said yes to any of those questions, you’ll want to come to our special “Lucy Neatby” event on June 22 from 12-4 PM at River City Yarns. We'll start with a show and tell of last month's KAL - the Carnival Cap and then move on to the next chosen project: Fiesta Mittens. We'll review the technique of two-colour knitting and work out the Flying Swallows pattern. Materials: you'll need the Fiesta Mittens pattern, 50 g each of a solid and handpainted fingering weight yarn, 2.0mm - 2.5mm double pointed needles (or circulars). This event is free, but space is limited... please RSVP to hold a spot for this event.
$Free!
Sunday, June 22 from 12:00 PM - 4:00 PM
